The Post Register had a great write-up on the game. Here is an excerpt:
Lott led Skyline with 16 points while Bodily added 12 and Zach Smith had 11 points and 7 assists….Both teams protected the ball like two teams that deserve to go to the state tournament–Idaho Falls turned it over eight times, Skyline five—but the district has only one berth….The two teams have split four meetings this season, with each team winning on the road. ”Who knows what’s going on with that?” Idaho Falls coach Darin Monk said. ”I can’t figure that one out.” Read the full article by Mike Lycklama in the Post Register. Tanner Bodily electrified the gym in the first half with an explosive dunk off a back door pass. Check back for video highlights!
For Boston Murdoch, 18 is not a lucky number when it comes to playing the Russetts. Eighteen is the number of points he scored in both outings against Shelley this season. The first game was a 59-57 barn burner in Idaho Falls. On Friday night in Shelley, Skyline had to play catch-up, and ended up losing 60-59.
Zach Smith logged a Skyline record 13 assists for the Grizz, scored 13 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, and spent much of the night guarding McKay Cannon who was held to 6 points after scoring 35 against the Grizz earlier in the year. Braden Lott scored 14 points and had 5 rebounds and 3 steals.
Skyline starting posts were again plagued by foul trouble, and Shelley’s big men Chad Catheer and Jason Christensen took advantage, scoring 16 and 13 points respectively. Greg Barton was a perfect 3-3 from the field, and junior guard Joel Martin logged 3 assists.
Skyline overcame foul trouble and a 11 point halftime deficit to win in overtime on Wednesday night against district rival Highland. The Rams came out hot, shooting 65% from the field in the first half. Skyline led 8-5 when Highland went on a 13-0 run. The Grizz never led again until Braden Lott hit a jumper from the key off a pass from Tanner Bodily in overtime, leaving 0.6 seconds on the clock and Skyline up by two. Lott intercepted the last second heave by Highland and the students rushed onto the floor to celebrate the important District 5-6 victory.
The Grizz forced 20 Highland turnovers with pressure defense. Skyline only had 5 turnovers for the game. Lott had 12 points, Boston Murdoch had 14 points and 4 steals, Zach Smith had 14 points and 7 assists, and Tyson Dennert had 10 points and took a key charge down the stretch. Tanner Bodily had 3 steals and the winning assist. Click here for complete game stats.
Grizz point guard Zach Smith had 27 points, 9 Assists, and 7 rebounds in a double overtime loss against cross-town rival Bonneville Friday night. Braden Lott scored 19 and Murdoch had 14 including four 3-pointers. Tanner Bodily scored 12 but fouled out in regulation, along with fellow starting post player Tyson Dennert.
After being down by 11 at halftime, Skyline battled back several times to keep the game in reach. With the game tied and the clock winding down, a foul call on an offensive board put Jared Stutzman from Bonneville at the free throw line. He hit both shots, but Zach Smith of Skyline drove the length of the floor and nailed a floater in the lane to beat the buzzer and put the game into overtime.
In overtime Skyline had it’s chances, but some missed foul shots left the game tied with the clock winding down. This time it was Skyline’s Braden Lott with the ball, and after a driving shot that just missed, the game went into double OT and Bonneville pulled off the three point victory.
Coach Ty Shippen said, “We weren’t getting back in transition in the first half and dug ourselves a hole, but I am so proud of how our kids battled back. They stayed together and put themselves in a position to win going down the stretch. It was a great game that we can learn a lot from. Bonneville played an excellent game.”
Bonneville’s freshman phenom Jared Stutzman scored 25 points in the win, and Kalin Keck and Dylan Black each had 16. Click here for complete game stats.
Here is the game summary from the Idaho Falls Post Register sports reporter:
At Bonneville, 32 minutes was not enough to decide Friday’s high school boys basketball game between Skyline and Bonneville. Nor was 36.
It took two overtimes for Bonneville to finally emerge with an 89-86 home win against Skyline.
Skyline point guard Zach Smith nearly carried his team to a win on his own, scoring the final four points of the game in regulation then adding eight more in two overtimes. He finished with a game-high 27 points.
“We absolutely could not stop Smith,” Bonneville coach Tim Hooten said. “That kid is quick. He hit a shot to force overtime where we took a timeout to set up a double team on him and he blew threw the double team and shot a 10-foot raindrop.”
Skyline grabbed a five-point lead in the first overtime, but Bonneville senior guard Dylan Black picked an opportune time to hit his only 3-pointer of the game to force the second overtime.
Kalin Keck hit his third 3-pointer of the game in the second overtime to give Bonneville a three-point lead, a lead the Bees held until the final buzzer by hitting their free throws down the stretch.
Bonneville (9-7) travels to Blackfoot on Wednesday, while Skyline (8-8) hosts Highland on Wednesday.
