Idaho Falls @ Skyline Friday night at 7 p.m. for the District Championship and a trip to the 2011 Boys State Basketball Tournament!
The Post Register had a great write-up on the game. Here is an excerpt:
Lott led Skyline with 16 points while Bodily added 12 and Zach Smith had 11 points and 7 assists….Both teams protected the ball like two teams that deserve to go to the state tournament–Idaho Falls turned it over eight times, Skyline five—but the district has only one berth….The two teams have split four meetings this season, with each team winning on the road. ”Who knows what’s going on with that?” Idaho Falls coach Darin Monk said. ”I can’t figure that one out.” Read the full article by Mike Lycklama in the Post Register. Tanner Bodily electrified the gym in the first half with an explosive dunk off a back door pass. Check back for video highlights!
Skyline eliminated top seed Highland from the District 5-6 tournament Tuesday night in Pocatello. Braden Lott scored 28 points on 11-15 shooting and Boston Murdoch added 16 on 5-9 shooting including four 3-pointers. Zach Smith had 7 assists. Skyline built a lead in the 1st quarter and never looked back. The Rams got within 5 in the 3rd quarter before the Grizz worked the ball for 40 seconds and Murdoch nailed a clutch 3-pointer from the corner. Skyline held a double digit lead until the final seconds of the game. The Rams hit 4 bank-shot 3-pointers in the final period to close the gap, but the outcome was never in doubt thanks to disciplined play and solid free throw shooting down the stretch. Bench play was key with quality minutes from Joel Martin and Braeden Mitchell.
Skyline will face Idaho Falls on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Tiger Den. The Grizz lost a heartbreaker in overtime to the Tigers last Wednesday. For Idaho Falls, a win will send them to the state tournament. For Skyline, a win will bring the district championship game back to the Taj Ma Grizz on Saturday.
Boston Murdoch, Braden Lott, and Zach Smith each scored 16 points, but it wasn’t enough as Skyline fell in overtime in the first round of the District 5-6 playoffs Wednesday night at Skyline. Skyline held a 5 point lead with 4 minutes left in regulation when Tanner Bodily fouled out on an offensive charge call. Two shots by Smith in the final seconds of regulation missed the mark. The Tigers won the jump and grabbed an early lead in overtime. They held on to win 70-65.
Idaho Falls guard Nick Graham led all scorers with 17 and frustrated Skyline with physical defense. Smith managed 6 assists and 8 rebounds but struggled immensely from the foul line. For the game, Idaho Falls was 17-24 from the stripe for 70%, but Skyline shot a dismal 11 of 26 even with Boston Murdoch and Braden Lott combining for 6-7. Braden Lott also tallied 5 steals in a strong all-around performance.
Idaho Falls will play at Highland on Friday, with Skyline playing the loser on Tuesday night in a win or go home game.

It was a big rebounding night for the Grizz–Bodily had 8, Greg Barton had 7, and Tyson Dennert had 6.
Like the varsity team, the Skyline JV’s built a big first half lead in a game that was never in doubt. But the momentum for Skyline started with an 18-1 run by the freshman team which culminated in a last second three-pointer by Jake Trost to give the Grizz the 1-point victory. (See clip below.)

To quote a favorite line from Larry the Legend…
“Imagine the arrogance, the wonderful arrogance, of a man who needs two to tie or three to win, has the time to do either one, and says, ‘Let’s roll the dice.” To view highlights of the entire freshman game, visit the Skyline Hoops YouTube Channel. or visit the Skyline Hoops Video Page.

Skyline (10-9) faces Hillcrest for Senior Night on Friday.
About Tournament Seeding
There is a three way tie in the final league standings with each team at 2-2. The tiebreaker is determined by head to head competition against common opponents Hillcrest, Bonneville, and Madison. Skyline and Highland have the edge over Idaho Falls with their sweeps of Madison, but Skyline’s 2OT loss against Bonneville means Highland has the edge in that series. Skyline must defeat Hillcrest on Friday night to ensure home court against Idaho Falls in the first game of the tournament next Wednesday at 7 p.m. The winner of that game will travel to Highland on Friday night. One team will go to state from our district. (5 automatics bids for Boise, and 2 automatic for Northern Idaho.) Next year we will have a play-in game so that two teams will have the chance to go.
For Boston Murdoch, 18 is not a lucky number when it comes to playing the Russetts. Eighteen is the number of points he scored in both outings against Shelley this season. The first game was a 59-57 barn burner in Idaho Falls. On Friday night in Shelley, Skyline had to play catch-up, and ended up losing 60-59.
Zach Smith logged a Skyline record 13 assists for the Grizz, scored 13 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, and spent much of the night guarding McKay Cannon who was held to 6 points after scoring 35 against the Grizz earlier in the year. Braden Lott scored 14 points and had 5 rebounds and 3 steals.
Skyline starting posts were again plagued by foul trouble, and Shelley’s big men Chad Catheer and Jason Christensen took advantage, scoring 16 and 13 points respectively. Greg Barton was a perfect 3-3 from the field, and junior guard Joel Martin logged 3 assists.
